If you need to protect your assets, a corporation is more in order. (Please note: These are only generalities and not meant to be the final authority on the legal and tax ramifications involved in business ownership. VolkNet Enterprises will not be held liable for decisions you make concerning your business entity, practice, etc.) You can obtain your business license/resellers permit at the county clerk’s office near you. Once you have a Sole Proprietorship or Corporation established, you can then open a business bank account. Once you have a business bank account, you need to get your site designed and up and running. Do these before you obtain a merchant account, because the provider wants to know you are a legitimate business before granting you the right to accept credit cards. Generally, they want to see something functioning before they’ll give you the thumbs up or down. Merchant account fees vary, and can sometimes be confusing. They average about $25 a month, plus a Gateway Fee (internet access basically) of $15, a statement fee of $10 (for an accurate monthly accounting of all transactions). On top of that, there is a 2.25% charge on each transaction, and .30 each transaction as well (2% goes to the bank, the .25%, and the .30 get split between visa and six other companies) Don’t get too caught up in it. Just know it averages about $50-$60 per month for a merchant account up to about the first $1100 in sales each month. You can usually get approved to have one if you have at least a fairly decent credit history. If you don’t want to go to that hassle, you can accept through PayPal which many opt to do, but there is credibility and convenience in being able to accept credit cards and you’ll have a lot more sales.
